Currently Pompano Beach operates under the city manager form of government -- the City Commission is the governing body, with an appointed city manager given authority over administration.

Prior to 1947, Pompano had a City Council and strong mayor form of government. In this system the elected mayor is responsible for directing the municipality's administration.
